Here we are aboard Martha, arguably the prettiest schooner in Puget Sound, which is to say in the world, I'm going to show you a couple of Belays. Now, a belay is a very demanding situation. If it was just a matter of fixing a line to an object, we could use a Bowline or a Buntline Hitch. It wouldn't matter. But a belay is a knot that has a much higher standard. You have to be able to apply it while the load is on the line. It's dynamic. Then you have to be able to secure the line so you can walk away from it indefinitely, and not have it slip or jam or come untied by itself. And then you have to come back and be able to undo it with that load still on the line, and slack away under control.
